Both types are used on school bus exhaust, but they serve different applications. Using the wrong type at a given joint is how a repeat failure occurs.


  • U-bolt clamp: cinches a joint by pulling a U-bolt tight over a pipe sleeve - appropriate for straight slip joints and tailpipe sections where vibration stress is low

  • Seal clamp: band-style design with a tightening saddle - creates uniform circumferential seal - required at flex pipe connections and muffler inlets where vibration and thermal movement are factors

How to Size a School Bus Exhaust Clamp Correctly


Clamp sizing is based on outside diameter of the pipe - not the inside. Measuring inside diameter is the most common ordering mistake.


  • Remove the old clamp and measure the OD of the pipe where the clamp seats, not the inlet diameter

  • If the pipe is corroded at the seating area, clean it before measuring - corrosion adds apparent OD

  • Confirm diameter: most school bus exhaust runs 3-inch or 4-inch OD - some Mercedes applications are 3.5-inch

  • Order to the measured OD - a 1/8-inch undersize clamp will not seat and will leak


Why Clamps Fail After Installation


Clamp failure after installation is almost always preventable. Common causes:


  • Undertorqued: most common cause of post-installation leaks - tighten to spec and retighten after the first heat cycle

  • Wrong size: a clamp one size too small will not achieve full compression - too large will not tighten down evenly

  • Reused on a damaged pipe surface: if the pipe has a groove or corrosion pit where the clamp seats, replace the pipe section, not just the clamp

  • U-bolt at a flex connection: U-bolt clamps loosen under vibration at flex joints - switch to a seal clamp if this is a repeat failure at the same location
